About Akim Alium
Akim Aliu has a unique background that has led to him being a champion for diversity in hockey. Aliu was born in Nigeria, spent his early years in Ukraine, and grew up in Canada. There he found a love of hockey and was eventually selected in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League draft. Aliu spent four seasons in the OHL and the Chicago Blackhawks made him a second-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He embarked on a lengthy professional career, where he played for various minor league teams before getting a shot to reach the NHL with the Calgary Flames during the 2012-13 season. Aliu continued to play as a pro until 2020 when he co-founded the Hockey Diversity Alliance with NHL veteran Evander Kane.
