About Art Howe
Art Howe is a longtime baseball man best known for managing the Houston Astros, Oakland A’s, and New York Mets. Howe’s greatest success came with the A’s, where from 2000-2002, he won at least 90 games each season and took Oakland to the playoffs three times. He gained a name as a coach on Bobby Valentine’s Texas Rangers staff from 1986-1988. Howe had an 11 year playing career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Astros, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was mostly a utility infielder, playing in 891 games and batting .260. A Pittsburgh native, Howe attended the University of Wyoming. More people outside of baseball became aware of his managerial due to the 2011 release of Moneyball, a film that dramatized A’s general manager Billy Beane’s statistic methods for building a baseball team. Howe was unhappy of his depiction as a simpleton in the film though.
