About David Cone
David Cone’s path the big leagues was unique, as he did not play baseball in high school. During his days at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri he played football and basketball, but not baseball due to the fact that his school did not have a team. However, after playing one season of summer ball he was invited to a tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals and ended up signing with the Royals after being drafted in the third round of the 1981 MLB Draft. Cone pitched in the minor leagues for five seasons before making his MLB debut in 1986 with the Royals. From 1986 to 2003 he pitched for the Royals, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox and won 194 games to go along with a sparking 3.46 career ERA and 2,688 career strikeouts. During his career he earned five All-Star selections, won the AL Cy Young Award in 1994, led the NL in strikeouts in 1990 and 1991 and earned five World Series rings with one coming with the Blue Jays in 1992 and the other four coming with the New York Yankees.
