About David Elson
David Elson got his start in college coaching as a graduate assistant coach at Southern Illinois University in 1994. After earning his masters degree he was hired at Western Kentucky University as the defensive backs coach in 1996. After two seasons in that role he was hired as the defensive coordinator at WKU and was eventually named head coach in 2003. From 2003 to 2009 he led the Hilltoppers to 39 wins while competing in the Gateway Football Conference and leading them through a transition to the Sun Belt Conference. After the 2009 season he was hired as an assistant at the University of Indiana for one season before heading to New Mexico State as the defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2013. Elson also spent time at Southern Illinois and Western Illinois before coming back to FBS football as the defensive coordinator at Ball State in 2017. Outside of football he enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters.
