About David Poile
David Poile is the winningest general manager in NHL history, known for his long tenure with the Nashville Predators. He built a reputation as one of the most respected executives in the NHL as the team's only GM since their debut in the 1998-99 season until his retirement in 2023.
After not making the postseason in any of their first five seasons, the Preds became an annual playoff contender. Poile's efforts were ultimately rewarded by the team's miraculous run to the 2017 Stanley Cup Final. That season, he was named NHL General Manager of the Year. Poile was also the recipient of the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2007.
Prior to coming to Nashville, he served as the vice president and general manager of the Washington Capitals. The Capitals made the playoffs in 14 of the 15 seasons of Poile's tenure. He took over after the team has missed the postseason in each of their first eight seasons as a franchise.
Poile started his career in hockey in 1972 with the Atlanta Flames. He moved with the franchise to Calgary and was eventually promoted to assistant general manager. Poile is a graduate of Northeastern University, where he holds the career record for hat tricks with 11.
