Derek Lowe

Derek Lowe is a retired two-time All-Star who was known as one of the best big game pitchers of his era. Lowe originally came up with the Seattle Mariners, but was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1997. The deal, which included catcher Jason Varitek, would be a key component to turning around the franchise's fortunes. Lowe spent the next eight seasons in Boston, earning All-Star bids in 2000 and 2002. His first All-Star appearance was during an American League-leading 42-save season as Boston's closer. After, Lowe transitioned back into the starting rotation, posting a 21-8 record with a 2.58 ERA in 2002 on the way to finishing third in AL Cy Young Award voting. He also threw a no-hitter that season.

In 2004, Lowe was a postseason hero, going 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA and helping the Red Sox win their first World Series in 86 years. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason and continued to have success, including leading the National League in wins in 2006. Lowe also went on to pitch for the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers before retiring in 2013. He is a now a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. Lowe is a cancer survivor as well and has worked with organizations that advocate and support the treatment and prevention of skin cancer and prostate cancer.
