About Doug English
Doug English is a retired NFL defensive tackle who played eleven seasons in the league with the Detroit Lions. Prior to his time in the NFL, English was a standout defensive player at the University of Texas, helping the Longhorns win three Southwest Conference Titles. In the 1975 NFL Draft, English was selected in the second round by the Detroit Lions, and would go on to play his entire career with the team. English along with Bubba Baker would create a feared pass rush known as “Silver Rush,” tormenting opposing teams for the majority of the 70s and 80s. English’s best season came in 1983 when he recorded 13 sacks, helping the Lions win the division and reach the playoffs. Unfortunately for English, a severe neck injury cut his career short in 1985, forcing him to retire after recording 59 sacks in 131 games. In 2011, English was recognized for his collegiate success when he was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
