Eugene Monroe was an American professional football player who spent seven years in the NFL. He is best remembered for being an advocate for medical marijuana and challenging the league's policy on the substance. While in high school, Monroe participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and was named a SuperPrep All-American, a Parade All-American and All-USA. As a true freshman at Virginia, Monroe played in every game. During his sophomore year, he played in 12 games and started in 6. As a junior, he missed two games due to a knee injury, but was still honorable mention All-ACC. In 2008, Monroe was a unanimous All-Atlantic Coast selection and voted the ACC’s most outstanding blocker. In the 2009 NFL draft, Monroe was selected eight overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars where he played for five years. During his final season with the Jaguars, Monroe started in all 16 games. In October 2013, Monroe was traded to the Baltimore Ravens. On March 11, 2014, Monroe resigned with the Ravens for $37.5 million for 5 years.
