About Frank Viola
Frank “Sweet Music” Viola is a former starting pitcher for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball. Viola played baseball collegiately for St. John’s University. The Kansas City Royals drafted Viola after his first year at St. John’s during the 1979 MLB Draft, but Viola did not sign. Two years later, Viola was drafted with the Minnesota Twins in the 1981 MLB Draft. On June 6, 1982, he made his Major League debut. Viola helped the Twins to their second World Series appearance and first World Series win in 1987. He was named the 1987 World Series Most Valuable Player after helping the Twins to the win. In 1998, Viola won the AL Cy Young Award. Viola was traded to the New York Mets in July 1989. Viola made the All-Star game for a third time in 1991. He was then traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1992, and during his time in Boston, he was injured and had to undergo Tommy John Surgery. Viola finished his career with the Cincinnati Reds and the Toronto Blue Jays. His pitching career came to an end on May 28, 1996.
