About Ian Thorpe
Ian Thorpe dominated in the pool during his illustrious international swimming career. Thorpe won five Olympic gold medals in swimming, more than any Australian ever. He took home a total of five medals at the 2000 Olympic, making him the most accomplished athlete of the Games. In 1998, Thorpe became the youngest individual male World Champion when he won the 400 meters. He then went on a tear, winning the 400 m at every Olympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Championship meet for six years. In 2001, he became the first person to win six gold medals at one World Championship. Thorpe set 13 individual long-course and five relay world records during his career. He won a total of 11 gold medals at Worlds, the third-most all-time. Thorpe was a four-time Swimming World Swimmer of the Year. He has been very involved in charity efforts back in Australia for indigenous children, which garnered him Member of the Order of Australia honors in 2019.
