About Ilia Topuria
Ilia Topuria is a Spanish-Georgian UFC fighter best known for being the current Featherweight Champion as of early 2025. Nicknamed “El Matador,” he started training in martial arts at age seven in Georgia, initially in Greco-Roman wrestling, before moving to Spain at 15 and transitioning to MMA. He turned pro soon after, building an undefeated 14-0 record before his UFC debut in 2020. He is known for his versatility, leaning on his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and storied resume with eight submission wins and has knockout power, with five KO/TKO victories.
He won the title by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski in the second round at UFC 298. He defended his belt against Max Holloway at UFC 308, winning via third-round knockout, marking Holloway’s first KO loss in the UFC. He went on to knock out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 to win the UFC Lightweight Title.
He is one of the sport’s most vocal and polarizing figures, often calling out high-profile fighters like Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. He has curated a strong following in the heritage lands of Spain and Georgia, usually paying homage to their culture and the unique blend that makes his upbringing. He has hinted at fighting in a different weight class.
Outside the octagon, he has a hand in various business ventures, a real estate company, and a fight club in Spain.
