About Jim Abbott
Jim Abbott’s story of making it to the major leagues despite being born without a right hand has inspired millions. His ten-year pitching career had several highlights, allowing Abbott to continually share his story with the masses. In 1993, he threw a memorable no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians while with the New York Yankees. His best season came with the California Angels in 1991. Abbott finished third in the Cy Young Award balloting with an 18-11 record and a 2.89 ERA. He also played for the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox and compiled an 87-108 career record. Abbott had a unique way of overcoming his disability to pitch and also was able to hit on the rare occasions he was called to do so. His story first struck a chord with the nation when he was a college star at Michigan. Abbott was the Golden Spikes Award winner in 1987 and Big 10 Male Athlete of the Year in 1988. His jersey is retired from the school and he was elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. Abbott released the autobiography, Imperfect An Improbable Life, in 2012.
