John Newcombe

John Newcombe was born and raised in New South Wales, Australia and rose to prominence as the No. 1 tennis player in the world during his illustrious career. He took up the game of tennis as a youngster and won the 1961 and 1963 Australian Junior Championships before helping Australia’s Davis Cup team to a championship in 1964. In 1965 he won the Australian Championship doubles title, and went on to win that title four more times in 1967, 1971, 1973 and 1976. He also captured the French Open doubles title three times, the Wimbledon doubles title six times and the US Open doubles title three times, while also winning the 1964 US Open and 1965 Australian Open in mixed doubles. As a singles player he was just as impressive, winning the Australian Open in 1973 and 1975, Wimbledon in 1967, 1970 and 1971 and the US Open in 1967 and 1973 in route to over $1 million in career earnings. During his career he tallied a 429-136 singles record to go along with a 332-113 doubles record. In 1986 he took his rightful place in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
