About Karl Dorrell
Karl Dorrell is the former head football coach at the University of Colorado and UCLA. Dorrell is perhaps best known for his run as the head coach of the Bruins. He was the first African-American coach in program history and guided them to a 35-27 mark over five seasons. UCLA was mostly a .500 team during Dorrell's tenure, but posted a standout 10-2 season in 2005 that landed them as a top 15 team in the final Coaches Poll of the season. He had a long break between head coaching stints, coaching exclusively in the NFL except for one season as the offensive coordinator at Vanderbilt in 2014. Dorrell spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and New York Jets, coaching wide receivers and quarterbacks.
Dorrell also played football at UCLA, where he was a standout wide receiver and part of three Rose Bowl teams. He began his career was a wide receivers coach at UCF in 1989. Prior to being named the Bruins head man, most of Dorrell's coaching experience was out west, with stops at places like Arizona State, Colorado and Washington.
