About Katie Smith
Katie Smith played 14 seasons in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx, Detroit Shock, Washington Mystics, Seattle Storm and New York Liberty from 1999 to 2013. Prior to making it big in women’s professional basketball she was a standout college and prep player. While playing at Bexley High School in Lancaster, Ohio she earned Gatorade National Player of the Year honors during her senior year after leading her team to a State Championship. After high school she played at Ohio State from 1992 to 1996. During her freshman season she led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Championship game. Over the next three seasons she broke the Big Ten scoring record, accumulating more points than any male or female player in conference history. Her performance at Ohio State earned her induction into the Ohio State Varsity O Hall of Fame in 2001. After earning her degree in Zoology in 1996 she headed to the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx. During her pro career she earned seven trips to the WNBA All-Star game, led the league in scoring in 2001, helped the Detroit Shock to two WNBA Championships in 2006 and 2008 and was named to the WNBA All-Decade Team in 2006. On an international level she represented the United States on numerous occasions, most notably on the Olympic level where she led her country to three consecutive gold medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic games.
