About Kyle Whittingham
Kyle Whittingham is the all-time winningest head football coach for the University of Utah. While in college, Whittingham played linebacker for BYU. After graduating from BYU, Whittingham became a graduate assistant for BYU from the 1985-86 season.
In 1987, Whittingham became the defensive coordinator at the College of Eastern Utah, where he coached one season before coaching at Idaho State. Whittingham spent five seasons at Idaho State before joining the Utah staff as the defensive line coach.
In 1995, Whittingham replaced his father as the defensive coordinator and became the head coach in 2004. The 2004 season ended with Whittingham helping Utah to become the first non-BCS Conference team to make a BCS Bowl Game. Utah played in the Fiesta Bowl and won. Whittingham’s first season as Utah’s head coach in 2005, was a roller coaster due to many changes that occurred. Utah became bowl eligible for the fourth straight year in 2006 where they played in the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl and beat the University of Tulsa. Utah also played in the 2005 Emerald Bowl, 2007 Poinsettia Bowl, 2008 Sugar Bowl, 2009 Poinsettia Bowl, and the 2010 Las Vegas Bowl. The Las Vegas Bowl was the only one that Utah lost.
