About Mario Lemieux
Two-time Stanley Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist, Mario Lemieux, played 17 years in the NHL between 1984 and 2005. During his time in the league he was named NHL MVP three times and led the league in scoring six times. Although he struggled with injuries during his career he still accumulated 690 goals and 1,033 assists, which ranked him 7th all-time at the time of his retirement in 2005. Prior to his retirement he earned a spot on Canada’s Walk of Fame, which was a huge honor for the Montreal native.
What makes Lemieux’s career unique is that he retired once in 1997 and came back. However, immediately following his first retirement the Hockey Hall of Fame waived the three-year waiting period for induction and honored him with induction right away. When he came back to play in 2000 he became one of only three players to play in the NHL as a hall of famer.
Lemieux is the principal owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team he played with during his entire career. A legendary player, Lemieux is widely regarded as the most talented player in NHL history.
