About Mark Kerr
Mark Kerr is a former American wrestler and mixed martial arts (MMA) pioneer. Excelling in collegiate wrestling, he won an NCAA Division I national championship at Syracuse University. He then transitioned to MMA in the 1990s, earning the moniker “The Smashing Machine” for his relentless grappling and striking style. His career highlights include two UFC Heavyweight Tournament wins, a World Vale Tudo Championship victory in Brazil, and notable bouts in PRIDE FC against stars like Kazuyuki Fujita. With a record of 15-11-0 (1 NC), Kerr helped legitimize MMA amid its infancy. However, chronic pain from wrestling injuries led to opioid addiction, detailed in the 2002 HBO documentary “The Smashing Machine”. Kerr’s story inspired the 2025 A24 biopic of the same name, directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Kerr. Now a UFC Hall of Famer, Kerr advocates for addiction recovery and shares a message of gritty reinvention, backed by candid insights, humor, and vulnerability.
