Matthew Mitcham

Matthew Mitcham was born on March 2, 1988 in Brisbane, Queensland. Growing up, Mitcham competed as a trampoline gymnast, until he was spotted by Wang Tong Xiang; the coach at the Australian Institute of Sport Diving Program. From then on, Mitcham competed in both diving and trampoline. In 1991 and 2001, Mitcham represented Australia as a tampolinist at the World Junior Championships and he won the double mini-tramp event. In 2003, Mitcham placed 6th at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. From 2002-2004, Mitcham was the national junior champion in diving, winning the events he competed in. In 2008, Mitcham represented Australia at the 2008 Summer Olympics and he won the gold medal in the synchro 10m platform. Mitcham became the first Australian male to win a gold medal in diving since 1924. Mitcham placed 13th in the semifinals of the 10m event at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and missed the mark to qualify for the finals.
