About Maurice Cheeks
Maurice “Mo” Cheeks is a retired professional basketball player and former head coach. Cheeks attended West Texas State University from 1974-78 where he played point guard. Cheeks was a three-time all-Missouri Valley Conference player. The Philadelphia 76ers selected Cheeks in the 2nd round as the 36th overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. Cheeks also played for the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and the New Jersey Nets. During his time as a player, Cheeks was a 4x NBA All-Star, 4x NBA All-Defensive First-Team, NBA All-Defensive Second Team, and an NBA Champion. After retiring from playing, Cheeks spent one year coaching in the CBA before becoming the assistant coach for the 76ers. Cheeks has coached for the Portland Trailblazers, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Detroit Pistons. On June 10, 2013, Cheeks agreed to become the head coach of the Detroit Pistons and it was announced on February 9, 2014, it was announced that Cheeks was relieved of his head coaching position.
