Mike Brey

Mike Brey grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and helped his hometown DeMatha Catholic High School to a 55-9 career record before heading to play basketball at Northwestern State University. After playing for three years at Northwestern he transferred to George Washington University where he earned his undergraduate degree in physical education in 1982. Upon graduation, he returned to DeMatha as an assistant coach from 1982 to 1987 before being hired as an assistant at Duke University in 1987. During his time at Duke, he helped the Blue Devils to unprecedented success and earned a reputation as one of the top basketball coaches and recruiting coordinators in the game.

In 1995, Brey was hired as the new head coach at the University of Delaware, where he went on to help the Fightin’ Blue Hens to 99 wins and two American East Conference regular season titles in five seasons. In 2000, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame hired him as their new head coach. He went on to lead them to 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. After the Fighting Irish finished 27-7 in 2011 he earned AP College Basketball Coach of the Year honors. Brey is also a three-time Big East Coach of the Year.
