About Mike Stoops
Mike Stoops is a former professional defensive back in the NFL who now serves as the defensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma. Stoops attended the University of Iowa where he was a safety on the Hawkeyes’ team. The Chicago Bears signed Stoops in May 1985 as a free agent, but he was cut from the team on August 7, 1985. The Atlanta Falcons signed Stoops in February 1986, but due to a ruptured gall bladder, Stoops missed minicamp and was cut. He then played for the Pittsburgh Gladiators of the AFL and he played for the Chicago Bears as a replacement in 1987. After his playing career came to an end, Stoops decided to try coaching. From 1986-91, Stoops served as an assistant coach for the University of Iowa. He also served as the assistant coach at Kansas State University. From 1999- 2003, Stoops served as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at the University of Oklahoma. He coached at the University of Arizona for 8 seasons before going back to Oklahoma in 2012.
