About Omar Minaya
Omar Minaya is a pioneering Dominican baseball executive, now a senior advisor for the New York Yankees, and is renowned for being the first Hispanic general manager in Major League Baseball history. Born in the Dominican Republic, Minaya moved to Queens, New York, at eight years old.
The Oakland Athletics drafted him in 1978, and he enjoyed a brief Minor League career before taking on a role beyond the diamond. His executive career began as a Texas Rangers scout, where he signed stellar talent like Sammy Sosa.
In the 1990s, he joined the New York Mets front office and was the architect for much of their success of that era, acting as assistant general manager and signing notable players such as Pedro Martínez and Carlos Beltrán. He was let go by the franchise in 2010 and headed west for a four-year stint with the San Diego Padres before returning to New York in 2017 in an advisory role. He joined the cross-town rival Yankees in 2023.
His influential career has left a trailblazing legacy for Hispanic executives in the League.
