About Ozzie Smith
Ozzie Smith is a former MLB shortstop, most famous for his years with the St. Louis Cardinals. Smith made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 1978, finishing second in the National League Rookie of the Year race. After three years with the Padres, Smith was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982, with manager Whitey Herzog stating “we will win a World Series with Smith as our shortstop.” Herzog’s statement would come true, as the Cardinals would go on to win the 1982 World Series, Smith being a key factor both offensively and defensively. 1996 would prove to be Smith’s final season, retiring after a fantastic 18 seasons. The Cardinals would go on to retire his now famous number one jersey, making him the last Cardinal to ever wear that number. Nicknamed “The Wizard” for his defensive skills, Smith would win 13 straight Gold Glove awards, along with accumulating many other honors, including 15 All Star honors, a Silver Slugger Award, and an NLCS MVP in 1985. In his first year of eligibility, 2002, Smith was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with over 91% of the vote.
