About Parker Byrd

Parker Byrd is an NCAA Division I baseball player for the East Carolina University (ECU) Pirates, notable for being the first to play in a game with a prosthetic leg. In July 2022, Byrd suffered a life-threatening boating accident resulting in severe injuries to both legs. After 22 surgeries spanning nearly two months, including a below-the-knee amputation of his right leg, he faced a grueling recovery. Despite this, Byrd returned to the field, making his collegiate debut on February 16, 2024, against Rider University, where he drew a walk and received a standing ovation.

On March 14, 2025, he recorded his first collegiate hit, a single against William & Mary. A highly ranked infielder from Laurinburg, North Carolina, Byrd committed to ECU in ninth grade and was seen as a potential MLB draft prospect before the accident. His resilience has inspired many, earning him the Laurel Wreath Award from North Carolina Governor Josh Stein in 2025.
