About Pat Kelsey
Pat Kelsey is an American college basketball coach for the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball team. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and played basketball at the University of Wyoming. He played 22 games as a true freshman for the Cowboys before returning home to the Queen City and suiting up for the Xavier University Musketeers from 1995 to 1998. He graduated cum laude with a degree in business administration and marketing. His coaching career began at Elder High School (1998-2001), where he helped win a state title as a senior.
He went on to Wake Forest University as director of basketball operations, assistant coach, and then as associate head coach at Xavier. His mentor, Skip Prosser at Wake Forest, coached future NBA stars Chris Paul and Jeff Teague. Kelsey’s head coaching career began at Winthrop University, amassing a 186-95 record and three NCAA Tournament bids. From there, he went to the College of Charleston, peaking with a 31-win season and back-to-back NCAA appearances.
Kelsey is known for his passionate coaching philosophy and focus on culture and player development. His fast-paced offensive style in year one at Louisville and tournament appearance after finishing last place the two seasons prior earned him ACC Coach of the Year accolades for 2025.
