About Paul Tagliabue
Paul Tagliabue is the former NFL Commissioner, leading the NFL from 1989 until 2006. Tagliabue attended Georgetown University under an athletic scholarship, playing basketball for the Hoyas until his graduation in 1962. After leaving Georgetown, Tagliabue studied at the New York University of Law, graduating in 1965, practicing with Washington D.C. based firm of Covington and Burling. While with Covington and Burling, Tagliabue worked with the NFL on various cases, and on November 5, 1989, was voted to succeed Pete Rozelle as Commissioner of the league. Under his leadership, the NFL would expand from 28 to 32 teams, as well as experiencing many team location changes, including the Raiders, the Rams, and many more. 17 years later, Tagliabue stepped down from his role, and was replaced by current commissioner Roger Goodell. Tagliabue has served various roles after stepping down, including serving as the appeals moderator during the highly publicized New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, eventually overturning the initial player’s suspensions after granting their appeal.
