Rafael Palmeiro is most commonly recognized as a former first baseman and left fielder in Major League Baseball. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1964, Palmeiro was originally named Rafael Palmeiro Corrales and moved to Miami, Florida early on in his childhood. Graduating from high school in Miami, Palmeiro then pursued a collegiate baseball career at Mississippi State University, where he became the only Southeastern Conference player to have ever won the triple crown. Following his time as a Bulldog, Palmeiro was selected in the first round of the 1985 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. Throughout his nearly twenty-year professional career, he played for the Cubs, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. He also was a two-time recipient of the Silver Slugger Award, three-time recipient of the Gold Glove Award and four-time All-Star. Palmeiro honorably concluded his professional career as a Baltimore Oriole in 2005. He retired with an outstanding 569 home runs and 3,020 hits. Due to his honorable character, Palmeiro was inducted into both the Mississippi State University Hall of Fame and Baseball Hall of Fame after retirement. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and kids.
