About Rick Ankiel
Rick Ankiel had one of the most unique progressions in his playing career in Major League Baseball. He played in high school where he had an 11-1 record with a 0.47 earned run average in his senior season. Rick was even named High School Player of the Year by USA Today that year. Ankiel then made the transition to the major leagues after being selected in the second round of the 1997 MLB Draft where he signed with the St Louis Cardinals. At the age of 20 he played in his first full season where he played in 30 games and earned The Sporting News Rookie Pitcher of the Year Award. Rick began to have issues controlling his pitches and was demoted to the minors to work on it. In 2007, Rick made it back to the majors as an outfielder where he hit a home run in his first game and had continued success until he announced his retirement early in 2014.
