About Rick Cerone
Rick Cerone had a successful 18-year career in Major League Baseball and is best known for his three different stints with the New York Yankees. Cerone was originally a first round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 1975 and made his debut that season. He went on to be the Opening Day starter at catcher for the expansion Toronto Blue Jays in 1977. Cerone really became entrenched in baseball lore when he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1980. In his first season, he finished seventh in American League MVP voting after hitting .277 with 14 home runs and 85 RBI, while throwing out a league leading 57 base stealers. Cerone would spend the majority of the rest of his career as a backup before retiring following the 1992 season. He spent time as a radio and television analyst in retirement. Cerone also founded the successful independent league team, the Newark Bears, in 1998. He is a fixture at Yankees Old Timers Days and is a popular choice for speaking engagements.
