Sabine Appelmans

Sabine Appelmans is a former tennis player whom represented her home country of Belgium for several years. Born in 1972, she had turned professional by the young age of sixteen. She began playing at the age of seven and hired a trainer not long after. Although initially right-handed, Appelmans became an ambidextrous player, a quality that gave her an advantage over many. She earned her first professional win by the age of nineteen in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the course of her thirteen-year career, she amassed a total of seven singles titles and four doubles titles. Applemans reached her highest ranking in November of 1997, during which she was ranked number 16 in the world. While representing her country and displaying a passion for the sport admired by many, Appelmans was named the Belgian Sportswoman of the Year both in 1990 and 1991. Although she retired in 2001, she went on to become captain of Belgium’s Fed Cup squad in 2007 for four years. Appelmans is currently giving back to the sport she learned so much from over the years by humbly serving as a highly respected tennis coach.
