Sean Conroy is the first and only openly gay professional baseball player. Conroy laces it up for the independent Sonoma Stompers. In June of 2015, he came out publicly during the team’s gay pride night when he also started and pitched a shutout. It was his first start after the 23-year-old had debuted during the season as a reliever. Conroy was recruited to the Northern California team from upstate New York. He pitched collegiately at the Division III level for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Conroy has been open about his sexuality with family and his baseball teammates since he was 16 years old.
