About Shelley Smith
Shelley Smith is a sports correspondent. Smith attended the University of Nebraska from 1976-81 where she majored in journalism and political science. She has wrote and reported for Sports Illustrated, Pacific Stars and Stripes, The San Francisco Examiner, and the Associated Press. Smith has also authored two books, “Just Give Me the Damn Ball!” and “Games Girls Play: Lessons to Guiding and Understanding Young Female Athletes.” Smith joined ESPN in January 1997 after she worked parttime as a reporter for ESPN since 1993. Smith won a Sports Emmy in 1997 for her segment on Magic Johnson as part of an ESPN production on AIDS and Athletes. Smith has covered Super Bowls, NBA Finals, the BCS Championship game, Stanley Cup playoffs, golf and tennis championships. It was announced on October 1, 2014, that she has breast cancer. She chose October 1 to make her announcement, as it was the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
