About Sparky Lyle
Sparky Lyle is a former professional pitcher who played in the MLB. While in high school, Lyle played basketball and football. It was not until his junior year that he began to play American Legion Baseball, as his high school did not have an organized baseball team. On June 17, 1964, Lyle signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Orioles. The Boston Red Sox selected Lyle in the first-year draft in 1964. On June 24, 1967, Lyle was called up to the Red Sox after Dennis Bennett went to the New York Mets. Lyle and the Red Sox made it to the World Series, but he was left off of the roster due to a sore arm. He then played for the New York Yankees from 1972-78. During this time, Lyle was a 3x All-Star, 2x World Series champion, AL Cy Young Award Winner, and 2x AL saves champion. He also played for the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago White Sox.
