About Terry Francona
Terry Francona, or “Tito,” as he is affectionately called, is a former MLB player and highly successful manager. Before he was a manager, Francona was an outstandingplayer at the University of Arizona, winning the Golden Spikes Award in 1980, and was draftedin the first round of the 1980 MLB draft by the Montreal Expos. Francona had a nine-year major league career, but really found his place in the game afterretiring from playing in 1990.
Francona became a big league manager for the first time with the Philadelphia Phillies in1997. He was hired as the manager of the Boston Red Sox in 2004. In his first seasonwith the Red Sox, Francona would lead them to their first World Series title in 86 years. His timewith the Red Sox would prove to be extremely successful, winning another World Series in 2007and constantly being a playoff contender.
Francona left Boston following the 2011 season and became the ClevelandIndians manager for the 2013 season, leading them to the playoffs in his first season. In 11 seasons, the Indians made the playoffs six times, including a trip to the 2016 World Series. Francona also became a three-time American League Manager of the Year in Cleveland before retiring in 2023. He was drawn back to the game to manage the Cincinnati Reds in 2025.
