About Tony Clark
Tony Clark is the former executive director of the MLB Players’ Association, becoming the first ex-player to take on the role. A native of Newton, Kansas, Clark was a 6’8" switch-hitter and first baseman for several MLB clubs, including the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres.
Clark was drafted second overall by the Tigers in 1990. He debuted in 1995, hitting .340 in 27 games. His peak came in 1997, with 32 home runs and 117 RBIs, and he earned All-Star honors in 2001. Despite lingering injuries, Clark retired with 251 home runs, 824 RBIs, and a .262 average over 1,559 games.
After leaving the diamond as a player, he joined the MLBPA in 2010 and became executive director three years later. He was the face at the negotiating table on behalf of players for the 2016 and 2021 collective bargaining agreements, navigating the 2022 lockout, and securing expanded playoffs and higher minimum wage salaries.
A man of strong Christian faith, he leads, focusing on player safety, mental health advocacy, and economic equity.
