About Tony Phillips
Tony Phillips is a former Major League Baseball player whose career spanned over 18 seasons. Tony began playing baseball at a young age in high school and even played basketball briefly in the time he spent at New Mexico Military Institute. He made his debut in May of 1982 in the majors for the Oakland Athletics. In his career he had many accomplishments including becoming the first Athletics player to hit for the cycle in 1986 against the Orioles. Tony also tied the American League record for most assists in a game with 12 against the Brewers. His skill continued to improve throughout his career, including becoming proficient at drawing walks once he joined the Detroit Tigers in 1989 where he led the league with 132 walks in 1993 following a 114 walk season in 1992. Tony retired with a career .266 batting average with 160 runs and 819 runs batted in, all of which proved important in Tony leading his team to winning the 1989 World Series.
