About Willie Lanier
Willie Lanier spent his entire Hall of Fame career with the Kansas City Chiefs. Lanier was a six-time Pro Bowler and eight-time All-Pro. The Chiefs have retired his number and he won Super Bowl IV with the franchise in the final season of the American Football League. In that Super Bowl, Lanier had seven tackles and one interception. He broke barriers as pro football’s first African-American middle linebacker. Lanier was part of a legendary trio of linebackers that included fellow Hall of Famer Bobby Bell and the player taken ahead of him in the draft by the Kansas City, Jim Lynch. The Chiefs originally selected Lanier in the second round in 1967. A loss in Super Bowl I partially prompted the franchise and head coach Hank Stram to draft him. Playing collegiately at Morgan State, Lanier was MVP of the 1966 Tangerine Bowl. Lanier also had a successful post-football business career, working as a stockbroker and as CEO of TDS/US.
