Barry Zito was a three-time All-Star pitcher and winner of the 2002 American League Cy Young Award. In that 2002 season, Zito went 23-5 with a 2.75 ERA for the AL West champion Oakland A’s. The A’s made the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. Zito left Oakland in 2006 to move across the bay and sign a seven-year, 126 million-dollar deal with the San Francisco Giants. Zito won World Series with the Giants in 2010 and 2012. In the 2012 postseason, he went 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Zito threw 7 2/3 shutout innings in Game 5 of the NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals and outpitched Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series. His offbeat personality and skills as a musician always made him stand out as one of baseball’s unique characters. Zito is founder of the charity Strikeouts for Troops, which provides comfort to injured military and their families.
