After two seasons in the minors, on September 21, 1969 Bill Buckner made his debut in Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since that time Bill racked up an impressive 2,715 hits, 174 home runs, 1,208 RBI’s, and retired with a .289 career batting average. Buckner was also an All-Star in 1981 as well as the winner of the battling title in 1980. Despite his impressive numbers, Bill is best known for his fielding error in the 1986 World Series. In extra innings in game 6, Bill was playing at first base when Mookie Wilson hit a slow roller in Buckner’s direction. As a result of rushing the play, the ball went to the side of Buckner’s glove and right between his legs into right field costing the Red Sox the game. After that, fans booed him, and even sent death threats. While it was a difficult time in his career, after being released by Boston, a few years later Bill returned to the Red Sox. His error was a thing of the past and he received a standing ovation from the crowd then, as well as when he returned again in 2008 to celebrate Boston’s 2007 World Series win.
