About Clint Malarchuk
Clint Malarchuk spent over a decade in the NHL as a goaltender, suiting up for the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres. Malarchuk originally made his debut in 1981. He is best known for surviving a life-threatening injury in 1989 when his carotid artery was sliced by a skate blade. Malarchuk suffered massive blood loss and had to get 300 stitches, but returned to the ice in ten days. He played several more seasons before finishing his career in the IHL. Malarchuk most notably played and eventually became head coach for the Las Vegas Thunder, having his jersey retired by the franchise. He went on to serve as a goaltending coach for several NHL teams. During his post-playing days, Malarchuk struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, nightmares and alcohol. He even attempted to take his own life, but bounced back to become an awareness advocate for mental health. Malarchuk told his story in the 2014 book, "The Crazy Game."
