Danny Wuerffel

From an early age it was clear to see that Danny Wuerffel was bound to be someone special.  While attending Fort Walton Beach High School Wuerffel led the Vikings to a state championship and graduated valedictorian of his class. He then attended the University of Florida and led the Gators to a National Championship in 1996, earning the Heisman Trophy that same season. In 1997 he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the 4th round of the NFL Draft and went on to play in both the NFL and the NFL’s European League before deciding to retire from football in 2004.  Wuerffel’s most impactful work has come off the field as a member of Desire Street Ministries, which has focused on revitalizing and rebuilding the 9th Ward in New Orleans. He has also become a powerful motivational speaker, addressing topics like leading with influence, achieving greatness through generosity and inspiring teams to greatness. Due to his inspiring work off the field, the Wuerffel Trophy is now awarded each year to the college football player who is best known for exemplary community service as well as academic and athletic achievement. Danny Wuerffel is the epitome of what it means to be a true sports hero.  His actions both on and off the field and how he’s used his platform to positively impact the lives of others serve as an example for all those who hear his story, hear him speak, and have a chance to meet him.
