Frank Mahovlich

Frank “The Big M” Mahovlich is a former Liberal Senator for the Canadian Senate and a retired NHL ice player. Several NHL teams scouted Mahovlich while he was playing for the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. Mahovlich signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and was sent to their Ontario Hockey Association affiliates Toronto St. Michael’s Majors. Mahovlich joined the Leafs in 1957 and scored 20 goals as a rookie, which led him to win the Calder Memorial Trophy. Mahovlich was part of the Leafs during their 1966-67 Stanley Cup win, and that year was his lowest-scoring year in seven seasons. In 1968, Mahovlich was traded to the Detroit Red Wings and in 1971; he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens. In 1974, Mahovlich left the NHL for the World Hockey Association. Mahovlich played in the NHL All-Star Games from 1959-1965 and then again from 1967-1974. He was a Stanley Cup Champion in 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1971, and 1973. Mahovlich was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981 and he was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
