About Jim Morris
Jim Morris had a brief major league career, but the story of how he got there made it legendary. After numerous arm problems as a minor league pitcher, Morris’ career lay dormant for over a decade. He became a high school coach and teacher in Texas and only after making a bet with the baseball team he coached would his big league dreams be realized. Morris’ team won a district title so he had to go to a professional tryout. When he auditioned for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999, he was clocked at 98 miles per hour on the radar gun and signed by the club. At 35 years old, he was back in the minor leagues and quickly moved up to make his major league debut. Morris made 16 appearances the following season before his arm troubles resurfaced, but the story was already written. He put out an autobiography, The Oldest Rookie, which was later made into a 2002 Disney film starring Dennis Quaid called The Rookie.
