Johnny Lujack grew up in western Pennsylvania and was a four-sport star at Connellsville High School from 1939 to 1941, graduating as both senior class president and valedictorian in 1941 and choosing to continue his athletic career at Notre Dame University. When he arrived at Notre Dame he decided to continue playing four sports and led the Fighting Irish to a national championship in football in 1943. After the 1943 season he joined the United States Navy as an officer and served in World War II from 1943 to 1946. Upon returning to Notre Dame he led his team to back-to-back national championships in football and won the Heisman Trophy in 1947 after leading his team to an undefeated 9-0 record. Prior to his senior season he appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine as the epitome of what it meant to be an American patriot. Upon earning his degree from Notre Dame he was selected in the first round of the 1947 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. After four years in the NFL he returned to Notre Dame as an assistant coach in 1952 and 1953 and then pursued a successful career as color commentator for NFL and college football games at CBS. Lujack is a member of both the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
