About Justin Smoak
Justin Smoak was a high school All-American at Stratford High School in Goose Creek High School prior to signing with the University of South Carolina. After leading his team to a South Carolina AAAA State Championship and earning State Mr. Baseball honors he was selected in the 16th round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics. However, the switch-hitting first baseman decided instead to continue his education and baseball career with the Gamecocks. During his three seasons at USC he hit a school record 62 homeruns, and earned All-American honors each season. The Texas Rangers selected Smoak with the 11th overall pick in the 1st round of the 2008 MLB Draft. After signing a minor league contract, including a $3.5 million signing bonus, he began a successful professional career. Two seasons later he earned a call-up to the big leagues, and was later traded to the Seattle Mariners late in the 2010 season. Smoak signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014 and spent the next five seasons with the club. He had a breakout campaign in 2017, earning his first All-Star bid and finishing a .270 batting average, 38 home runs and 90 RBI.
