About Livan Hernandez
Livan Hernandez had a remarkable 17-year major league career. Hernandez bravely defected to the United States from Cuba as a 20-year-old in 1995. He made his major league debut for the Florida Marlins the following year. Hernandez would catch the eye of the nation in 1997. He helped the Marlins win their first World Series, being named MVP of the NLCS and World Series along the way. Hernandez pitched for Florida for parts of two more seasons before being traded to the San Francisco Giants. He went on to play for seven more franchises in his lengthy career, most notably the Washington Nationals. Hernandez was always considered one of the best defensive pitchers in baseball and was also recognized for his hitting by winning the Silver Slugger Award in 2004. He was extremely reliable as well, leading the National League in innings pitched three times and complete games twice. Hernandez officially retired in 2014 with 178 career victories.
