About Maya Gabeira
Maya Gabeira is a professional big wave surfer and she was born on April 10, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gabeira won the ESPY Award for Best Female Action Sports Athlete in 2009. In that same year, Gabeira surfed the biggest wave every by a female when she successfully rode a 46 ft. wave at Dungeons in South Africa. In 2010, Gabeira was awarded with the Billabong Girls Best Overall Performance Award for her fourth year in a row. She also won the 2010 Teen Choice Award for Choice Action Sports Athlete Female. On October 20, 2013, Gabeira was surfing a massive wave about 70 feet tall near Nazare, Portugal when he lost consciousness and nearly drowned. She struggled to keep her head above the water, but could not manage. She tried to be saved twice before a fellow big-wave surfer Carlos Burle saved her. The Monday after her accident, Gabeira was in the hospital resting comfortably as she only experienced a broken ankle.
