About Michael Cooper
Michael Cooper was the defensive backbone of the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s. The five-time NBA champion spent his entire 12-year career in Los Angeles. Cooper was the 1987 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a five-time NBA first-team All-Defensive Team member. A notable playing tenure lent way to a successful second career as a coach. Cooper got his first opportunity as an assistant with the Lakers in the mid-1990s. He won two championships as the head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and was the 2000 WNBA Coach of the Year. Cooper spent one season as an assistant and then interim head coach of the Denver Nuggets before coaching in the D-League and getting a second stint with the Sparks. For four seasons, he jumped into the women’s college ranks and was 72-57 at USC. Cooper currently serves as the head coach of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.
