About Mike Grier
Mike Grier made NHL history in 2022 as the league's first black general manager with the San Jose Sharks. Prior to becoming a top executive, Grier had a 14-year playing career and was the first black player to train exclusively in the United States. He originally debuted with the Edmonton Oilers in 1996 after starring at Boston University. After retiring in 2011, Grier rose up the ranks on the personnel side, beginning as a scout with the Chicago Blackhawks. He was also an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils and worked in hockey operations for the New York Rangers. Uniquely, his father, Bobby, spent significant time working in the front office of NFL franchises and his brother, Chris, is the general manager of the Miami Dolphins.
